It's a season of change for Iowa State's McCoy

Monday, May 28, 2012

The U.S. Postal Service will see a surge in business after the NCAA Championship as players flood PGA Tour tournament directors’ mailboxes with requests for sponsor invitations.

Iowa State senior Nate McCoy won’t have to worry about postage and handling after a pre-emptive Q-School attempt. He locked up playing privileges at Canadian Tour Q-School before the NCAA postseason. He finished fifth at the Q-School, then was seventh at the following week’s regional in Oklahoma to earn his first NCAA Championship berth.

“It definitely takes care of a lot,” McCoy said of his Q-School graduation, which came shortly after he completed his degree in communications studies.

McCoy, the 2011 Dogwood Invitational champion, has one more big task to complete before embarking full-time on his pro career: he’s getting married June 16 in West Des Moines, Iowa, to Ashley Costanzo, a former goalkeeper on Iowa State’s women’s soccer team.

Their honeymoon? That will have to wait until later in the year. They’re scheduled to leave a day or two after the wedding for a Canadian Tour event in Edmonton, Alberta. The couple plan to drive there, with Costanzo caddieing for McCoy throughout the season.

“It’s going to be a fun summer,” McCoy said. readers: We value your input and welcome your comments, but please be respectful in this forum.
