Last year: Steve Stricker won the first of his two 2012 titles, beating Matt Kuchar and Brandt Jobe by a stroke.
Last week: Zach Johnson won the Colonial for his eighth PGA Tour title and first since the 2010 tournament, beating Jason Dufner by a stroke. Johnson was assessed a two-stroke penalty on the final hole for failing to replace his ball to its original position after marking it before his last putt.
Notes: Tiger Woods is making his first start since tying for 40th in The Players Championship on May 13. He won the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March for his first PGA Tour title since September 2009. Woods has a record four victories in the event, winning in 1999-2001 and 2009. ... Jack Nicklaus founded the event in 1976 and won in 1977 and 1984. ... Luke Donald took the top spot in the world ranking from Rory McIlroy last week, successfully defending his title in the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship. Donald and McIlroy are in the field along with Stricker, Dufner, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan. ... Stricker won the season-opening Tournament of Champions for his 12th PGA Tour title. ... The St. Jude Classic is next week in Memphis, Tenn., followed by the U.S. Open at Olympic Club in San Francisco.

LPGA TOUR: SHOPRITE LPGA CLASSIC
Site: Galloway, N.J.
Course: Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, Bay Course (6,155 yards, par 71).
Purse: $1.5 million. Winner’s share: $225,000.
Television: Golf Channel (Friday, 12:30-2:30 p.m.; Saturday, 2:30-6 p.m.; Sunday, 3-5 a.m., 2-6 p.m.; Monday, 3-5 a.m.).
Last year: Brittany Lincicome won the first of her two 2012 titles, birdieing the final hole to beat Cristie Kerr and Jiyai Shin by a stroke.
Last event: Azahara Munoz won the Sybase Match Play Championship on May 20, beating Candie Kung 2 and 1. In the semifinals, Munoz rallied to beat Morgan Pressel 2 and 1 after Pressel was penalized for slow play. Pressel appeared to take a 3-up lead at the 12th hole, but lost the hole with the penalty to drop her advantage to 1-up.
Notes: The tournament returned to the tour in 2010. First played in 1986, it folded in 2006 after the previous organizers accused then-LPGA Tour commissioner Carolyn Bivens of providing three unsuitable dates for the 2007 event. Bivens resigned in July 2009 after a group of players wrote a letter to the tour’s board of directors calling for her to quit. She was replaced by Michael Whan. ... Top-ranked Yani Tseng has won three of the first nine events this season. ... Michelle Wie is in the field. ... The LPGA Championship is next week in Pittsford, N.Y.

Purse: $1.75 million. Winner’s share: $262,500.
Television: Golf Channel (Friday, 6:30-8:30 p.m.; Saturday, 12:30-2:30 a.m., 6:30-9:30 p.m.; Sunday, 1-3 a.m., 7-9:30 p.m.; Monday, 1-3 a.m.).
Last year: Bob Gilder won his 10th Champions Tour title to become the oldest winner in tournament history at 60 years, 6 months, 5 days. He closed with a 30-foot birdie putt, then escaped with a one-stroke victory when Mark Brooks bogeyed the hole.
Last week: England’s Roger Chapman won the Senior PGA Championship at Harbor Shores in Michigan for his first Champions Tour title. John Cook finished second, two strokes back in the major championship.
Notes: Hale Irwin will be 67 on Sunday. The Champions Tour career victory leader with 45, Irwin was third last week in the Senior PGA. ... The Regions Tradition is next week at Shoal Creek in Alabama.

EUROPEAN TOUR: WALES OPEN

Last year: Sweden’s Alexander Noren won his second European Tour title, beating France’s Gregory Bourdy and Denmark’s Anders Hansen by two strokes.
Last week: England’s Luke Donald took the top spot in the world ranking from Rory McIlroy for the third time in 10 weeks, successfully defending his title in the BMW PGA Championship. Donald won the tour’s flagship event by four strokes, closing with a 4-under 68 on Wentworth’s West Course. McIlroy missed the cut.
Notes: In October 2010 at Celtic Manor, Europe won the Ryder Cup, beating the United States 14 1/2-13 1/2 when Graeme McDowell held off Hunter Mahan in the final singles match. ... American Rich Beem is in the field. ... The Nordea Masters is next week at Bro Hof Slott in Stockholm.

Last year: Kyle Thompson birdied the final hole for a one-stroke victory over Scott Brown, Troy Kelly and Martin Flores. Thompson also won the 2007 tournament.
Last event: Nick Flanagan won the BMW Charity Pro-Am on May 20, beating fellow Australian Cameron Percy with a par on the third hole of a playoff.
Notes: South Georgia Classic winner Luke List leads the money list with $223,848. The final top 25 will earn 2013 PGA Tour cards. ... Hale Irwin designed TPC Wakefield Plantation. ... The Mexico Open is next week at El Bosque in Leon.
