Couples, Price name Presidents Cup assistants
Tuesday, October 2, 2012
Fred Couples and Nick Price announced their captain’s assistants for the 2013 Presidents Cup on Tuesday.
Couples, who captained the United States to Presidents Cup victories in 2009 and 2011, named Jay Haas as one of his assistants for the event, which will take place Oct. 3-6 at Muirfield Village in Dublin, Ohio. Couples will make another announcement in the coming months, according to a PGA Tour release.
Shigeki Maruyama, Mark McNulty and Tony Johnstone will assist Price with the International team, which is 1-7-1 in the biennial matches pitting the world's best golfers (non-European) against the Americans.
Haas, who has won nine times on the PGA Tour and 16 times on the Champions Tour, including two major championships, played in two Presidents Cups (1994 and 2003). He was an assistant to Couples in each of the past two Presidents Cups.
“Jay has really been my right-hand man these past two Presidents Cups, and I know I couldn’t do my job as captain without him,” Couples said.
Maruyama and McNulty have competed as players in two Presidents Cups. Maruyama, who has won three PGA Tour events, went 5-0 in the 1998 Presidents Cup. McNulty, winner of 16 European Tour events, was a teammate of Price's in 1994 and 1996.
Johnstone was the winner of the 1992 British PGA Championship.
“The three of us have enjoyed a friendship and rivalry that has lasted more than 40 years," Price said, "and having played on many teams together during that time, they were an obvious choice for me."
