North Carolina wins Tar Heel for second fall title
Monday, October 15, 2012
North Carolina claimed its second consecutive victory of the fall season at home, winning the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational by 13 shots. The Tar Heels held off Mississippi and Baylor at the UNC Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Tar Heels finished 54 holes with an 8-over 872 total. It marked the first time North Carolina has won back-to-back tournament titles since March 2004 when the team won the LSU/Cleveland Golf Classic and the Lady Gamecock Classic.
“It was a very exciting day out there,” head coach Jan Mann said. “I don’t think I’ve been that nervous since I got married. When we were at Georgia we were only ahead by a couple of shots, but I was fine, I was calm. But I have to admit, I was pretty nervous for these girls to come in and win at their home course because it’s always difficult. I’m just so proud of them. I’m so proud of every single one of them.”
A tie for second place, at 21-over 885, marks the best finish of the fall season for Ole Miss. It’s the second time in three tournaments this season Baylor has finished runner-up. Duke was two shots back in solo fourth, and Virginia and Arkansas tied for fifth another shot back.
Florida’s Isabelle Lendl won the individual title, her second this fall, with a 6-under 210 total. Baylor’s Hayley Davis was second and Virginia’s Brittany Altomare was third.
