Penn State wins Mercedes-Benz for 2nd fall title
Penn State won the Mercedes-Benz Intercollegiate on Oct. 14, finishing atop a field with five teams ranked inside Golfweek’s top 30. Penn State checks in at No. 37. The Mercedes is the team’s second consecutive victory this season. Penn State won its own Nittany Lion Invitational on Sept. 30.
Penn State pulled away from host Tennessee in the final round, finishing with a 3-over 867 team total at Holston Hills Country Club in Knoxville, Tenn. The Lady Vols were at 7-over 871.
“This was a fantastic victory for this team,” Penn State head coach Denise St. Pierre said. “We played so well against 18 good teams, with many of them being ranked ahead of us. This certainly is one of the top wins for the history of Penn State golf.”
Purdue finished third on the individual leaderboard and Northwestern was fourth.
Purdue’s Paula Reto won the individual title with a 5-under 211. Furman’s Laura Wearn was one shot back, followed by Texas A&M’s Mary Michael Maggio.
