Thursday, October 18, 2012
Oklahoma shot a school-record 8-under 280 in the final round of its home event on Oct. 18, the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic, to earn its first victory of the fall season. The Sooners finished 29 shots ahead of runner-up Notre Dame.
Oklahoma finished 54 holes at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla., with a 5-under 859 total that also set a school record.
“Unbelievable. That is about all I can say,” said OU head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell. “The girls played really solid, especially today. The conditions were even tougher today, with the wind switching halfway through the round, but the girls were just really prepared. I told them this morning that it was going to play a little different than it has the past couple of days. They just did unbelievable. It was a lot of fun to watch them.”
Reigning NCAA individual champion Chirapat Jao-Javanil led the final-round charge with a 4-under 68 that left her atop the individual leaderboard at 7-under 209. It’s her first victory this year, and the fourth of her career. Three other Sooners finished inside the top 15.
Denver finished 10 shots behind Notre Dame in solo third as Texas Tech and SMU rounded out the top 5.
