KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -- Tiger Woods didn't make a typical run, but his methodical 4-under 67 kept him in the mix at the CIMB Classic.

Behind six birdies and two bogeys, Woods is 9 under for the tournament, currently five shots behind Robert Garrigus, who fired an 7-under 64 to take a two-shot overall lead.

Woods' playing competitor, Jbe Kruger, fired a 7-under 64 to finish at 12 under thru 36 holes.

See how it all unfolded on Friday:

• • •

No. 18, Par 4, 447 yards

Tiger had legitimate looks at eagle on all three par-5s on Friday, missing narrowly twice. A finishing birdie could put him in one of the final groups on Saturday.

Off the tee: Tiger takes driver again and smacks it up the left side of the fairway. A little twirl of the club after that one too.

Approach shot: With 130 yards left, Tiger goes right at the flag and holds the green, leaving himself about 12 feet for a finishing birdie.

On the green: Tiger's birdie attempt cuts under the hole and he taps in for a par to cap off a 4-under 67.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under (9 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus birdies yet again, this time at the par-4 15th hole to move to 14 under overall. He is two ahead of Jbe Kruger, who shot a 7-under 64 to finish at 12 under overall.

• • •

No. 17, Par 5, 523 yards

The last scoring hole for Tiger with the shortest par 5 next on his docket. Sitting four shots back of Robert Garrigus, Tiger knows he needs to make some noise here, as it is likely those behind him will also take advantage of the hole.

Off the tee: With the big stick in hand, Tiger hammers his tee ball up the left side of the fairway. Big ball there and he should be able to attack the pin that is in the back of the green.

Second shot: Tiger stays aggressive and attacks the back pin, sending it just off the back of the green, where he'll have a nice look at the hole for a potential eagle.

Around the green: Gives the hole a scare again with a chip, but this one moves to the right late and sets up a 4-footer for birdie.

On the green: Tiger drains the birdie putt to move to four shots back of leader Robert Garrigus. Tiger birdied all three par-5s today.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under (9 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus picks up yet another birdie at No. 13 to move to 13 under, one clear of Jbe Kruger and three ahead of overnight leader Troy Matteson. Greg Chalmers moves to 5 under on the day and 10 under overall with a birdie at No. 16. Ben Crane birdies No. 18 to card a 5-under 66 to move to 8 under for the tournament.

• • •

No. 16, Par 3, 185 yards

Tiger is four shots off the lead at 8 under, joining Greg Chalmers, Brendon de Jonge, Tom Gillis and Brian Harman. He birdied the 16th on Thursday, nearly picking up an ace.

Off the tee: Solid shot into the green, not flirting with the dangerous pin location in the front and just above the water and leaving himself about 25 feet from behind the hole.

On the green: Tiger sees right-to-left break in this one, but it doesn't move much at all and he sends it about 3 feet past the hole. He knocks that in for a two-putt par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under (8 under for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus has taken the outright lead with a birdie bomb at No. 12, moving him to 12 under and one shot clear of Jbe Kruger.

• • •

No. 15, Par 4, 292 yards

Tiger will definitely give going after this green some thought. He needs something to give him a slight lift, as he has dropped four shots back.

Off the tee: Tiger takes 3-wood here - yes, he has the distance to hit this green - but finds the rough to the left of the green.

Around the green: Tiger nearly holes it out, hitting the cup with a beautiful chip and leaves himself 3 feet for birdie. Beautiful shot. He thought it was in.

On the green: Buries the easy birdie putt and gets back to within three shots of the lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under (8 under for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Greg Chalmers has moved to 8 under behind three birdies in his opening four holes on the back nine. He started the round with nine pars.

• • •

No. 14, Par 3, 194 yards

Tiger has played a solid round of golf, but a couple of birdies on the way in would go an awful long way, even if just for a later tee time on Saturday. Tiger is now four shots off the lead held by Robert Garrigus and Jbe Kruger.

Off the tee: Tiger thinks he has the right shot here, but it goes long and bounds off the green, setting up a chip back to the hole.

Around the green: Tiger's chip takes a hard bounce and runs about 8 feet past the hole. He needs this one if he wants to stay in striking distance.

On the green: He makes the putt and that is a huge save for Woods. Couldn't afford a third bogey on the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for the tournament)

• • •

No. 13, Par 4, 422 yards

Tiger had a chance to inch closer to the lead there, but burns yet another right edge. That's four birdies and two bogeys thru 12 holes. There are nine players tied with Tiger at 7 under.

Off the tee: With fairway wood in hand, Tiger rips it up the left side of the fairway, but it stays in the first cut of rough and he will not be able to lift, clean and replace.

Approach shot: Tiger takes his second shot right over the flag and sticks it about 20 feet from the hole.

On the green: Tiger knew this one was offline immediately, with the ball moving under the hole and he taps in for a par. Not as hot on these back-nine holes on Friday - or at least not yet.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus picked up his third consecutive birdie, the last one at No. 10 to help the American move to 11 under to take a momentary lead, but Jbe Kruger birdies No. 13 to jump into a tie atop the leaderboard.

• • •

No. 12, Par 4, 476 yards

That was Tiger's fourth birdie of the day, and again narrowly missing an eagle by burning the right edge. Tiger is now chasing his playing competitor, as Kruger is 6 under on the round.

Off the tee: After stopping in his backswing once, Tiger goes right with his tee ball, causing a few "Fore!" calls to be required. He just came out of his swing too early. He'll have a tough second shot from some thick rough.

Approach shot: Blocked by trees, Tiger has to be careful here and not be overly aggressive and get into more trouble. He takes 5-wood and runs it up the left side of the fairway and it trickles just into the first cut of rough. A good angle into the right pin location.

Third shot: From about 60 yards, Tiger puts his long chip shot to about 8 feet to the left of the hole.

On the green: Tiger misses the putt and picks up his first bogey on the back-nine over the first two days. Still three shots off the lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus ends his front-nine with birdies at Nos. 8 and 9 to get to 10 under, and is now tied for the lead after Kruger drops a shot at No. 12 with his first bogey of the day. The two are tied with Troy Matteson.

• • •

No. 11, Par 5, 557 yards

That is four consecutive pars for Tiger, but he now moves to the second par 5 on the course and one that he can attack.

Off the tee: With driver in hand, Tiger pummels it into the middle of the fairway. Very little roll again, as it checks upon landing.

Second shot: Facing a small target and water to the left, Tiger hits a fantastic ball to about pin-high and 20 feet right of the flag. Great shot.

On the green: Tiger plays too much right-to-left break on the eagle attempt, sending it about 4 feet past. Tiger drains the comebacker to get within three shots of the lead.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under (8 under for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Jbe Kruger birdies No. 11 to take the outright lead at 11 under, while Robert Garrigus moves to 9 under behind a birdie at No. 8. Kevin Na moves to 8 under behind a birdie at No. 11.

• • •

No. 10, Par 4, 454 yards

Tiger posts three birdies and a bogey on the front nine and now heads to a back-nine that he played at 5 under in the first round.

Off the tee: With iron in hand - and a large gallery surrounding the 10th tee box - Tiger slides it right up the middle of the fairway. Again, he gets no run on the ball because of the wet conditions, but he is hitting from the short grass.

Approach shot: After backing off the ball to get the dripping sweat off his hat, Tiger plays a subpar shot into the green, leaving the ball about 50 feet left of the hole. He is frustrated by the swing.

On the green: Tiger leaves his lengthy birdie attempt about 3 feet short of the cup. He drains that for par. He is now three off the lead, the same as he started the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for the tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Troy Matteson birdies the par-4 6th hole to move to 10 under, tied with Kruger, who buries a lengthy birdie on No. 10 to get into double figures. They are two shots clear of Tom Gillis. Defending champion Bo Van Pelt cards a 6-under 65 to get to 7 under.

• • •

No. 9, Par 4, 451 yards

Solid par for Tiger at the 8th hole, playing it safe from tee to green. He has burned the edge on four of his first eight holes.

Off the tee: Playing the downhill par 4, Tiger needs no more than a long iron and he just glides it down the right side of the fairway. Another easy-looking swing there.

Approach shot: Well done here, as Tiger lofts a high shot and sticks it to about 15 feet under the hole. Good look again at birdie.

On the green: Good pace on this putt, but it fades a bit right at the end and he two-putts for par. He makes the turn with a 2-under 33.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for tournament)

• • •

No. 8, Par 4, 411 yards

This was the site of the first of two Tiger bogeys in the first round. Maybe that chip in on No. 7 will help him.

Off the tee: Tiger pulls driver and hammers it down the middle. It does something you don't see every day though, as it hits a mound in the middle and funnels backward. He needed a couple more yards to make the drive perfect.

Approach shot: With the pin tucked on the left side, Tiger takes it well right of the hole and leaves himself more than 30 feet for birdie. Safe shot.

On the green: The ball tracks all the way to the hole, but burns the right edge and Tiger settles for a par. Well-struck putt. Kruger does birdie to move to 9 under.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: With a birdie at the par-5 3rd hole, Troy Matteson has moved to 9 under, tied with Kruger atop the leaderboard.

• • •

No. 7, Par 3, 190 yards

There is now a four-way tie for the lead, with Kruger, Matteson, Tom Gillis and Jeff Overton all at 8 under. Tiger is one of 11 players within two shots of the lead.

Off the tee: Another poor tee ball here from Tiger, simply yanking it left and he'll have a tough up-and-down from the rough.

Around the green: Tiger gets a great lie and he hits a perfect chip that finds the bottom of the cup. Raises his wedge into the air as it drops. Nice shot.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under (7 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Trevor Immelman is now one shot off the lead with a birdie at No. 17. He'd go on to par the final hole and card an 8-under 63.

• • •

No. 6, Par 4, 371 yards

Tiger has done well so far this week in responding to bad holes with birdies, and that one at No. 5 was crucial as the leaders get their rounds underway.

Off the tee: Tiger takes iron and hits a bit of a hook, but it finds the left side of the fairway.

Approach shot: With 120 yards into the front-right pin, Tiger hits a wedge and leaves it about 25 feet left of the hole. Nice shot, but he wanted better.

On the green: Tiger thought he had this one, but it slides by on the right and he taps in for an easy par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under (6 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Leader Troy Matteson starts with two pars to stay at 8 under. Tom Gillis birdies the par-5 3rd hole to get to 7 under. Carl Pettersson is 5 under on his round (thru 11 holes) to also get to 7 under. There are only four players in the field of 48 that are over par for the tournament.

• • •

No. 5, Par 4, 460 yards

Tiger had a birdie at this par 4 on Thursday and could use a quick response to his first bogey of the day.

Off the tee: Tiger takes 3-wood here and hammers it up the middle of the fairway. Back to the calm swing we saw on the first three holes.

Approach shot: With wedge in hand, Tiger plays a very high shot that lands near pin-high and spins back to about 10 feet under the hole. Good birdie chance.

On the green: Tiger reads this putt perfectly, draining the left-to-right bender for his second birdie of the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under (6 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Trevor Immelman is 7 under on his round to move to 6 under overall. Kevin Na bogeys the 5th hole to fall back to 6 under, two back of Troy Matteson. Brian Harman also falls back to 6 under with a bogey at No. 1.

• • •

No. 4, Par 4, 475 yards

Tiger said after Thursday's first round that the winner of this tournament would need to be better than 20 under at the end of it all, which is why eagle misses could come back to haunt him.

Off the tee: Tiger takes driver again here and hits a horrible ball that goes well right. They'll need to search for a bit to see if it is playable.

Approach shot: They do find his ball, but he has all sorts of trees in front of him. He somehow gets it out cleanly, but then flirts with the hazard to the left of the green. A bit too aggressive there.

On the green: Tiger hits a solid putt, but it never starts high enough and he two-putts for bogey. After poor first and second shots, bogey is a solid score here.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even (5 under for tournament)

Around the green: Incredible guts to even hit this shot, slamming a ball out of the wet hazard to about 25 feet under the hole. Mud splattered all over the place, but he made great contact and gives himself a chance to save par.

Elsewhere on the course: Nick Watney is now in contention, moving to 6 under by going 6 under thru 15 holes on Friday.

• • •

No. 3, Par 5, 527 yards

Tiger moves to the first of three par 5s on this par-71 course and needs to make sure he takes advantage of each as he tries to chase down the leaders.

Off the tee: Pulls driver and absolutely hammers it, even getting run from the wet fairways. Tiger will be able to get after the green in two for sure.

Second shot: Tiger looks supremely confident after this swing, and for good reason, as it hits the front of the green and settles about 15 feet under the hole. Will have a great look at eagle.

On the green: Tiger is frustrated after leaving his eagle attempt to the right and tapping in for a birdie. That almost felt like a dropped shot. Kruger also birdies to get to 7 under.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under (6 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Kevin Na has started his round on fire, picking up a birdie at No. 2 and an eagle at No. 3 to move to 7 under overall. Pat Perez is 2 under on his round to move to 6 under.

• • •

No. 2, Par 3, 170 yards

Tiger has parred the short par-4 1st both days, a bit abnormal for a guy that has so much distance.

Off the tee: Tiger starts barking "Sit! Sit!" almost immediately, and the wet greens comply, as he lands it just past pin-high and about 20 feet to the right of the hole.

On the green: After watching Kruger nail a putt from off the green for birdie, Tiger doesn't hit it quite hard enough and picks up a two-putt par. Started walking after the putt immediately.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even (5 under for tournament)

• Elsewhere on the course: Former Masters champ Trevor Immelman has the round of the day going, moving to 4 under overall by going 5 under thru 11 holes. With a birdie at the par-5 3rd hole, Ben Crane has also moved to 4 under.

• • •

No. 1, Par 4, 363 yards

Tiger is wearing all black today, with the exception of a white Nike hat with a swoosh in the middle, not his normal TW logo. He also has white kicks on. His arms are already in a lather, as the humidity continues to play a role in the tournament.

Off the tee: A long iron off the tee at the first hole and just a simple swing, rapping it into the middle of the fairway. Very smooth swing there.

Approach shot: Tiger seems to like the swing initially, but doesn't give it enough to get on top of a ridge that the far-left pin is on, with the ball running back down the ridge and leaving a 30-footer for birdie. Solid, but not great.

On the green: Very nice putt from Tiger here, leaving it about 6 inches to the left of the cup. He taps in for a solid par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even (5 under for tournament)

Elsewhere on the course: Defending champion Bo Van Pelt has moved to 4 under with a birdie at No. 9, but still trails Matteson by five shots. John Huh is also at 4 under, while Carl Pettersson is 2 under on his round and 4 under overall as well.
