6. Washington

2011-12 Golfweek/Sagarin rank: 10

Go-to guy: Chris Williams

Season outlook: The Huskies have plenty of talent to contend for a national title. Senior Chris Williams and sophomore Cheng-Tsung Pan should continue to lead the way while upperclassmen Charlie Hughes and Trevor Simsby are expected to kick it up a notch.

Williams, the world’s top-ranked amateur, had a stellar summer. He won the Western Amateur and the Sahalee Players Championship, reached match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links and advanced to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Amateur. He’ll play in the World Amateur Team Championship Oct. 4-7 in Turkey.

Head coach Matt Thurmond added a talented recruit in freshman Jonathan Sanders, who could see some action this fall.

Washington might not be as deep as some other elite teams, but with Williams leading the way, it’ll be tough to beat.
