Purdue opens with Mary Fossum victory

The Purdue Boilermakers, No. 12 in Golfweek’s preseason rankings, won their first event of the fall season Sunday at the Mary Fossum Invitational. All five Boilermakers finished in the top 25. This marked the first time since the 2006-07 season that the Boilermakers have opened with a victory.
Purdue finished the 54-hole event at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich., with an 11-over 875 total. The team was seven shots clear of host Michigan State, and Notre Dame placed third with a team total of 887. Texas State finished fourth at 900, followed by a fifth-place showing by Miami. Purdue’s first-round score of even-par 288 was the best team score of the tournament.
Senior Paula Reto and freshman Margaux Vanmol finished in a tie for fourth at 3-over 219. Reto held the 36-hole lead, but finished with a final-round 5-over 77. Senior Laura Gonzalez shot the low score of the final round for the Boilermakers, a 1-under 71, which put her in tie for sixth. Rounding out the lineup, red-shirt senior Kishi Sinha finished in eighth, and sophomore Aurora Kan finished was solo 24th.
Texas State senior Krista Puisite claimed the individual title at 1-under 215.
