Iowa State finished atop a tight leaderboard Tuesday at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The Cyclones edged three teams tied for second, just one shot back.
Iowa State entered the third and final round at the UNM Championship Course in Albuquerque, N.M., in the third spot on the leaderboard. A 7-over 295 left the Cyclones barely ahead of UC Davis, UNLV and Ohio State. Iowa State finished the event with a 10-over 886 total. This is the first team title the Cyclones have won since a historical 2010-11 season, during which the team won three times.
“This is a great way to start the season and a big win for our program,” head coach Christie Martens said. “Everybody played well and contributed. It came down to the final holes, and it’s a great reminder to our team how every shot counts.”
Freshman Cajsa Persson led the team with three consecutive rounds of even-par 73 that left her in a tie for sixth.
Colorado’s Jennifer Coleman was the individual medalist with an 11-under 208 total that left the rest of the field far behind. Ohio State’s Rachel Rohanna was next at 3-under 216.
