THE BIG 5

Stories you need to know

TEAMS

1. Purdue: A season-opening victory at the Michigan State-hosted Mary Fossum Invitational helps the Boilermakers establish some early-fall bragging rights in the North, and in the Big Ten.

2. Iowa State: The Cyclones were winless last year after a historic three-win season in 2010-11. They broke that streak with a victory at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational.

3. Washington: In a battle of the Northwest schools, Washington claimed an overwhelming 25-shot victory at the Oregon State Invitational. Note that Trysting Tree Golf Club in Corvallis, Ore., is no easy track.

4. Florida: After the Gators won their season opener at the Cougar Classic on Sept. 11, they returned a week later to finish runner-up at the Dale McNamara Invitational. It’s one of the best starts among the few teams in the country who have played more than once this season.

5. Texas State: Two Bobcats have claimed individual medalist honors in the team’s two starts this season. Senior Valdis Jonsdottir was co-medalist at the Chris Banister Classic and senior Krista Puisite won the Mary Fossum Invitational.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Isabelle Lendl, Florida: The Dale McNamara title was the senior’s first collegiate victory since the 2010 Central District Invitational. Read: A long time coming. Lendl’s game seems to be coming around for her final season as a gator.

2. Daniela Ordonez, Arizona State: She finished runner-up to Lendl at the Dale with three consecutive rounds of 1-under 71. Ordonez becomes the first Sun Devil since Carlota Ciganda in 2009 (NCAA West Regional) to shoot under par for all three rounds of a tournament.

3. Jennifer Coleman, Colorado: The Buffs lost three key members of the team that last year qualified for the NCAA Championship for the first time in history, but junior Coleman is keeping Colorado in headlines with her Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational victory. She won by eight shots.

4. Cajssa Persson, Iowa State: The freshman was the low Cyclone in Iowa State’s victory at the Branch Law.

5. Annie Dulman, Rollins: She earned a top-5 finish in her Rollins debut at the Cardinal Cup. Her Division II team held its own against a Division I dominant field.
