Toy Box: Snedeker opts for unconventional

In a world of white TaylorMade driver heads, Tour Championship winner Brandt Snedeker romped with a black-headed TaylorMade Burner SuperFast driver (8.5 degree) with a Fujikura Motore VC 7.2 X shaft.

Snedeker is a Bridgestone staff player, and his irons (4-PW) were Bridgestone’s J40 Cavity Back model with Aerotech SteelFiber i95 X Constant Weight graphite shafts. This makes Snedeker one of a handful of players to have won on the PGA Tour with graphite iron shafts.

The rest of Snedeker’s bag: Tour Edge Exotics CB4 3-wood (13 degree, with Mitsubishi Diamana Blue Board 73 X), Ping Anser hybrid (20 degree, with UST Mamiya Proforce VTS 100 X shaft), Bridgestone J40 wedges (52 and 56 degree, with True Temper Dynamic Gold X100 shafts), Titleist Vokey Design Spin Milled wedge (60 degree, with True Temper DG Spinner shaft) and Odyssey White Hot XG Rossie putter. He used a Bridgestone Tour B330 ball.

Guthrie relies on mostly Ping clubs: Luke Guthrie won back-to-back events on the Web.com Tour, with titles in Idaho and Texas. Guthrie’s bag: Ping G20 driver (9.5 degree), Ping i20 3-wood (14 degree), Titleist 910 hybrid (19 degree), Ping S57 irons (3-PW), Cleveland CG Series wedges (54 and 60 degree) and Ping Redwood Anser putter. He played a Titleist Pro V1x ball.

All in the hands for Lee: Danny Lee, who finished one stroke behind Guthrie at the Web.com’s WNB Golf Classic, is a club junkie who knows what he likes. His regular grips are Golf Pride Tour Velvet. However, Lee latched onto a new Callaway Razr Fit driver (9.5 degree with a Mitsubishi Kuro Kage 70 X shaft) that had a Lamkin Crossline grip.

A Callaway tour rep offered to change the grip, but Lee wanted to keep the driver exactly as it was. He didn’t want it to feel or perform any differently. So, of Lee’s 13 grips on full-swing clubs, 12 were Tour Velvets and one was a Crossline.

Rose tries new TaylorMade gear, takes second: Justin Rose surprisingly switched three crucial clubs on the eve of the Tour Championship. He must of known something as he finished second and won $864,000.

Rose used a new TaylorMade RBZ driver (9.5 degree), a new RBZ 3-wood (15 degree) and a new Ghost Tour DA-12 prototype putter.

Top finishes for Aldila shaft: Two players demonstrated the range of Aldila’s new RIP Phenom golf shaft: Michael Putnam (T-7 at WNB Golf Classic) used the Phenom 100 in his Adams Idea Pro hybrid (19 degree). Meanwhile, Guy Boros (T-9 at WNB) played the Phenom 65 in his TaylorMade 911S driver (9 degree).

Short shots: Ryan Moore used a new TaylorMade RBZ 3-wood, asking tour van technicians to bend the loft from 15 degree to 14 degree. Moore said the stronger club, rather than a driver, would be better for tee shots on some of East Lake’s narrow holes. . . . Success for Bridgestone staff players came on and off the course during 2012. Not only did Brandt Snedeker capture the Tour Championship, but Matt Kuchar won The Players Championship, and Fred Couples and Nick Price were named 2013 Presidents Cup captains. And, of course, Davis Love III is captain of the 2012 U.S. Ryder Cup team. . . . Stacy Lewis wore FootJoy LoPro Casual golf shoes in winning the Navistar LPGA Classic, while Guthrie wore FootJoy Icon golf shoes.
