MEDINAH, Ill. -- In a stunning turn of events, Martin Kaymer drained a 5-foot putt for par on the 18th hole to defeat Steve Stricker and clinch the retention of the Ryder Cup, capping an incredible comeback from a 10-6 deficit at the outset of the day.

Europe won the first five matches of the day, including two comebacks by Ian Poulter and Justin Rose, and put the U.S. on the ropes with late victories by Sergio Garcia and Lee Westwood.

The victory ties the largest comeback in Ryder Cup history, matching the USA's come-from-behind victory at Brookline in 1999.

The Europeans have won seven of the last nine Ryder Cups.

A little bit of drama before this match even starts. McIlroy didn't arrive on the grounds until about 10 minutes before his tee time. He thought his tee time was 12:25 p.m. CDT when it was really 12:25 p.m. EDT. He needed a police escort to get to the course and he's now quickly preparing for his match with arguably the hottest U.S. player so far this Ryder Cup.

After a few practice putts and an energy bar, McIlroy tees off first and sends his drive right into the gallery. The crowd knows about Rory's troubles this morning and they're letting him hear it. Bradley then steps up and finds the fairway.

He's nodding his head as he walks off the tee box. Watson goes first with his approach and finds the green. He'll have a 12 footer for birdie. Donald follows and sticks it closer, to about 10 feet.
