THE BIG 5

Stories you need to know now . . .

TEAMS

1. Cal: The No. 1 Golden Bears won the Western Intercollegiate for their ninth title in 11 starts this season. The Bears did it with quite a comeback at Pasatiempo, turning a nine-shot deficit entering the final round into a 13-shot victory. Both Max Homa and Michael Kim finished second in the event. Cal’s final-round 340 was the day’s best round by 17 shots. The Bears won without Michael Weaver, who was competing in the Masters.

2. Texas: The Longhorns picked up their second consecutive win by claiming their own Morris Williams Intercollegiate. Texas, No. 3 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, began the final round tied with No. 4 New Mexico and No. 6 TCU. What did the Longhorns do? Shoot the low round of the final day, a 2-under 286, to win by five. The Longhorns were six shots better than TCU and 12 shots better than New Mexico in the final round.

3. UCLA: Lost in Cal’s comeback was an impressive performance by UCLA, which finished at 14-over 1,064, 13 shots behind the Bears. Cal was 17 shots ahead of third-place Stanford. The Bruins also had three of the top six players on the leaderboard. Pedro Figueiredo won the individual title by two shots, while Lorens Chan and Pontus Widegren tied for fourth. UCLA is No. 5 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

4. Texas Tech: The No. 36 Red Raiders finished second at the Morris Williams Intercollegiate, finishing ahead of the likes of No. 4 New Mexico, No. 6 TCU and No. 14 Oklahoma State.

5. Iowa: The Hawkeyes, No. 58 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished second to No. 98 in the Kansas at the Hawkeye-Great River Entertainment Invitational. Iowa improved its head-to-head record to 43-45-2. The Hawkeyes, who have been to three of the past four NCAA Championships, need to improve their record to .500 or better, or win the Big Ten Championship, to make the postseason.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Pedro Figueiredo, UCLA: The senior, No. 14 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, won the Western Intercollegiate by two shots over Cal teammates Max Homa and Michael Kim.

2. Jack Perry, Northwestern: Perry didn’t just collect his second win of the season at the Northwestern Spring Invitational, but he broke a school record belonging to Luke Donald. Perry shot 16-under 200 at the Glen Club to break Donald’s school 54-hole record by two shots (David Lipsky also shared the 54-hole scoring record). Perry won the event by eight strokes over second-place Boo Timko of Ohio State.

3. Michael Kim, Cal: The No. 1 player in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings strengthened his player-of-the-year candidacy with a runner-up finish at the Western Intercollegiate. Kim has finished no worse than 11th in 11 starts. He has four wins and two runners-up this season.

4. Finley Ewing IV, Texas Tech: Ewing, No. 36 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, has finished in the top 5 in four of his past six starts, including a victory at the Morris Williams. He also shot 61 earlier this year at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate.

5. Amateurs at Augusta: Tianlang Guan, 14, may have made the cut at Augusta National, but none of the three collegians in the field could do the same. Cal’s Michael Weaver shot 78-74; Florida’s T.J. Vogel shot 77-75; Chattanooga' Steven Fox shot 76-81.
