Fox falters, but Chattanooga still wins Southern Conference

No. 50 Chattanooga barely held off Davidson's push for a postseason bid, while U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox couldn't close out a conference championship of his own.

Chattanooga finished at 20-over 884 after three rounds at Daniel Island's Ralston Creek Course in Daniel Island, S.C., to win the Southern Conference Championship. Davidson, No. 95 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, finished two shots back; the Wildcats likely needed to win the conference title to earn a postseason bid.

Davidson started the final round three shots off Chattanooga's lead, but was one stroke better in the final round, 295-296. It was Chattanooga's second consecutive SoCon title and fifth in the past seven years.

College of Charleston's Josh Lorenzetti won the individual title with a 1-under 215 (76-69-70) total. Fox, Davidson's Todd Eckstein and UNC Greensboro's Taylor Coalson finished second, two shots back. Lorenzetti is No. 505 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings.

Fox started the day with a two-shot lead over Lorenzetti and Eckstein, who is Davidson's No. 5 player and ranked 830th in the Golfweek rankings. Fox shot a back-nine 39, including a bogey at the par-5 18th, to shoot a final-round 74. Eckstein birdied Nos. 13 and 14 but bogeyed the last hole to shoot 72. Coalson shot 70, matching Lorenzetti for the low score of the day.
