Stanford junior Patrick Rodgers shot 6-under 66 Thursday to take a four-shot lead after the third round of stroke play at the 111th Western Amateur Championship.
Rodgers, one of five players who already have been named as members of this year's U.S. Walker Cup team, is at 15-under 201 after 54 holes, followed by Oklahoma State sophomore Jordan Niebrugge (70) at 11-under 205. Niebrugge won the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship last month.
Former North Texas player Carlos Ortiz (67) is third at 206, followed by Arkansas sophomore Taylor Moore (67) and Georgia Tech senior Seth Reeves (72) in a tie for fourth at 207.
Some players had to complete their second rounds Thursday morning before the field was cut to the low 44 players and ties. Notable players missing the cut were Fred Haskins Award winner Michael Kim, Alabama senior Bobby Wyatt and defending U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox.
The final round of stroke play will be held Friday, then the field will be cut to the low 16 scores for match play. The Round of 16 and quarterfinal round is scheduled for Saturday, and the semifinals and championship match will be played Sunday. All matches are 18 holes.
