27. Mississippi State
2012-13 Golfweek rank: 28
Go-to guy: Senior Chad Ramey
Season outlook: The Bulldogs have experience at the top of their lineup in seniors Chad Ramey, Axel Boasson and Joe Sakulpolphaisan. Ramey, a Magnolia State native, led Mississippi State in scoring average (71.88) as a junior and had five top 5s, including a victory at the Tiger Invitational. All three players competed in 11 or more events a year ago, with Boasson, who is from Iceland, and Sakulpolphaisan, of Thailand, each adding a pair of top 5s.
Head coach Clay Homan will lean on his senior trio a lot this season, but he’ll need one or two other players to step up if the Bulldogs are to better last season's 10th-place NCAA regionals finish.
“We have several guys who have the potential to grab one of those (last two) spots,” Homan said.
The leading candidates are senior Barrett Edens, who competed in six events as a junior, and freshmen Ben Follett-Smith, Jackson Dick and Jonathan Newnham.
Mississippi State advanced to the postseason last spring for the first time since 2009. The last time they advanced to the NCAA Championship was in 2008. If the bottom of the lineup comes through, the Bulldogs could end that drought this season.
