22. Michigan State
2012-13 Golfweek rank: 23
Go-to girl: Senior Allyssa Ferrell
Season outlook: With the much-decorated Caroline Powers gone, seniors Allyssa Ferrell, Christine Meier and Liz Nagel must step up and lead the Spartans. The trio combined for 11 top-10 finishes as juniors, four by Ferrell, but had only one top 5 apiece. More will be expected this season, but the potential is there. Ferrell and Meier posted top 5s at the Big Ten Championship, and Meier tied for sixth at the NCAA finals. In between, Nagel notched a final-round 68 at the NCAA Central Regional when the Spartans needed it most.
Juniors Jenny Sritragul and Trisha Witherby, who played nine and eight events last season, respectively, are favorites to round out the Michigan State starting five, giving the Spartans a lineup with plenty of experience. Freshman Kelly Grassel of Chesterton, Ind., who reached match play at the U.S. Women's Amateur, also could challenge for playing time.
Last season, MSU posted the program's best finish at an NCAA Championship, tying for ninth place, and Meier's T-6 equaled the best NCAA finish by a Spartan. Can this year's team match or better that without Powers?
