Amateur roundup: Neeley, Soerries win in Texas
Two champions were crowned in Texas over the weekend as Luke Neeley rolled to the Texas North Amateur title while Tony Soerries took the South championship.
Neeley entered the final round of the North Amateur at Walnut Creek Country Club’s with a five-shot lead and never looked back.
Neeley, a member at the host club, went 4- under in final round action and won by 10 shots.
In the South, Soerries won in wire-to-wire fashion at Kingwood’s Deerwood Club. Soerries battled wet weather and the field, winning with a final-round 77.

TIM HOGARTH WINS LOS ANGELES CITY MATCH PLAY: Tim Hogarth is the champion of the 2013 Los Angeles City Championship.
Hogarth, a long-time fixture in Southern California Golf Association and U.S. Golf Association events (Hogarth won the 1996 U.S. Amateur Public Links and was runner-up at the 2010 U.S. Mid-Amateur), defeated Clayton Yamaguchi, 5 and 4, in Sunday’s final match at Rancho Park.
Hogarth defeated No. 2-seeded Michael Brockington in Saturday’s quarterfinals to advance.

CHARLOTTE CITY: OWEIDA TOPS JASPERS FOR TITLE: Phillip OWeida shot rounds of 68-68-72 to win the 2013 Charlotte City Amateur Championship.
Oweida, who had a share of the lead after Round 1, prevailed in a playoff over Joe Jaspers, who shot a second-round 65 to climb into contention.
David Sargent shot three consecutive rounds of 70 to tie for third with William Rainey (73-68-69).

SIMMERMAN ROLLS AT SAN ANTONIO MATCH PLAY: Danny Simmerman, the No. 11 seed on the match-play bracket, went the distance Aug. 11, winning the 2013 Greater San Antonio Match Play Championship at Fair Oaks Ranch.
Simmerman defeated No. 16-seeded Ian Evans by an impressive 7-and-6 margin.
Top-seeded Chris Contreras was upset in Round 2, falling to No. 33 Ryan Luna.
Bobby Baugh won the Senior Division from the No. 2 seed.

ILLINOIS AMATEUR INVITATIONAL: SLUTZKY HOLDS ON: Chadd Slutzky posted rounds of 64-67 to win the Illinois Amateur Invitational at Schaumberg Golf Club by two shots.
Slutzky raced out to an early advantage with a first-round 64. He took a two-shot lead over Stephen Kois into Sunday’s final round. Kois shot 72 to tie for fourth but Kyle Nathan and Daniel Stringfellow both carded rounds of 65 to make things interesting as play concluded.
In the end, though, no one was able to catch Slutzky.

RED-HOT EVAN RUSSELL WINS VERMONT AMATEUR: Evan Russell continued his winning ways with a four-stroke victory at the 2013 Vermont Amateur Championship at the Country Club of Barre.
Russell, who won the New England Amateur earlier this summer, shot rounds of 69-68-71-71 and at 5-under 279, was four shots ahead of runner-up Bryan Smith.
Smith (75-65-72-71) was the only other player who finished 72 holes under par.
