BROOKLINE, Mass. – Chelso Barrett seems to have Jim Liu’s number.

Barrett defeated Liu in the Round of 32 at the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur, when Liu was the defending champion, and again Wednesday in the Round of 64 at the U.S. Amateur at The Country Club, 3 and 2.

Barrett, the 2011 U.S. Junior Amateur runner-up, got off to a disappointing start as he lost the second hole after missing the green.

“The rough is really penal,” Barrett said.

He fought back to get 1 up in the match after making a birdie putt on the par-4 fourth and made a par-saving putt on five.

“I was really pressing to win a couple of holes and try to get up in the match,” Barrett said.

Liu drove the green on the 270-yard par-4 sixth and made birdie from 4 feet. That squared the match again.

The match went back and forth for the next few holes. Barrett, from Surry, N.H., a 2 1/2-hour drive from the Boston area, has multiple family members and friends here this week, and the TCU freshman didn’t want to disappoint them.

The momentum swung in Barrett’s favor when, on the par-5 12th, Liu mis-hit his wedge shot from 60 yards and was left with a 15-yard approach. Barrett put his wedge shot over the green but managed to get up and down for par.

Liu, a freshman at Stanford, made a few more mistakes coming in, which opened the door for Barrett.

Off the tee on No. 14, Liu drove into trees on the left. His recovery shot got caught in a branch and stayed up in a tree. Barrett went 2 up.

On the 15th, Liu drove it left again, this time out-of-bounds, en route to a double bogey.

“I just tried to stay on top of things and not give away the opportunity that I had,” Barrett said about Liu’s slip-ups and his taking advantage of the match.

Barrett, 3 up with three to play, got up-and-down from the rough on the 16th. Liu, who also missed the green, needed a chip-in for birdie, but his shot rolled over the edge.

Barrett, in his third U.S. Amateur, is making his first appearance in match play. However, he has plenty of match-play experience.

“I guess I put a little bit of pressure on myself to get here (to qualify for the Amateur), but once I got here I felt really comfortable," he said. "I’m used to these types of course, and I like it."
