Match-by-match breakdown of U.S. Am quarters

The stage is set at the U.S. Amateur, with a decidedly international flavor as the quarterfinalists take to The Country Club on Friday.

We take a closer look at the match-ups, including who will be moving onto Saturday's semifinals:

• • •

Neil Raymond vs. Corey Conners

RAYMOND AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 28

Age: 27

Hometown: Hampshire, England

The road to the quarters: Stroke play co-medalist; def. Jason Anthony, 1 up; def. Zachary Olsen, 2 and 1; def. Nathan Holman, 1 up.

CONNERS AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 39

Age: 21

Hometown: Listowel, Ontario, Canada

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-38); def. Roldolfo Cazaubon, 5 and 4; def. Bryson Dechambeau, 2 and 1; def. Patrick Rodgers, 5 and 3.

THE MATCH-UP: Raymond has got off to slow starts in all three of his matches thus far, while Connors has been able to get up on his opponent quickly. Raymond has shown that he won’t give up, even when people think he’s down and out for the count. Connors will have to try to get out to a fast start to have any chance.

PREDICTION: Raymond, 1 up

Adam Ball vs. Matthew Fitzpatrick

BALL AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 776

Age: 19

Hometown: Richmond, Va.

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-20); def. Joey Petronio, 6 and 4; def. Max Orrin, 2 and 1; def. Chelso Barrett, 6 and 5.

FITZPATRICK AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 2

Age: 18

Hometown: Sheffield, England

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-3); def. Gerrit Chambers, 4 and 3; def. Blake Morris, 4 and 3; def. Gavin Hall, 4 and 3.

THE MATCH-UP: Both players have made pretty quick work of their opponents up until this point. Ball has played only 44 of 54 possible holes, while Fitzpatrick has yet to play Nos. 16-18 in match play. Fitzpatrick has much more experience than the Virginia Commonwealth sophomore, but don’t underestimate this underdog.

PREDICTION: Fitzpatrick, 3 and 2

Brady Watt vs. Scottie Scheffler

WATT AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 9

Age: 22

Hometown: Perth, Australia

The road to the quarters: Stroke play co-medalist; def. Sean Walsh, 5 and 3; def. Seth Reeves, 3 and 2; def. Charlie Hughes, 2 and 1.

SCHEFFLER AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 16

Age: 17

Hometown: Dallas, Texas

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-50); def. Stewart Jolly, 20 holes; def. Brandon Hagy, 20 holes; def. Matthias Schwab, 1 up.

THE MATCH-UP: Watt has been playing golf in the States for a total of seven weeks. Scheffler, the U.S. Junior Amateur champ, is going on a four-match come-from-behind winning streak dating back to the Junior Amateur Championship match. If anyone can defeat this Aussie, it’s Scheffler, because of his new ‘never-give-up’ mentality.

PREDICTION: Scheffler, 1 up

Oliver Goss vs. Brandon Matthews

GOSS AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 13

Age: 19

Hometown: Perth, Australia

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-3); def. Toni Hakula, 1 up; def. Carr Vernon, 2 up; Xander Schauffele, 3 and 1.

MATTHEWS AT A GLANCE

World Amateur Golf Ranking: 415

Age: 19

Hometown: Dupont, Pa.

The road to the quarters: Stroke play (T-20); def. Matt Pinizzotto, 1 up; def. Gavin Green, 4 and 3; def. Charlie Danielson, 4 and 3.

THE MATCH-UP: A 2012 U.S. Am quarterfinalist, Goss has been in this position before, but he’s running into a hot player in Matthews, a Temple sophomore. But Goss might have a bit too much in this battle.

PREDICTION: Goss, 2 and 1
