Pettersen guides Euros into afternoon with 3-1 lead

PARKER, Colo. – Twenty-four hours ago, Suzann Pettersen helped carry European Team rookie Carlota Ciganda through pre-tournament press conferences. On Friday morning, Pettersen put a European point on the board with another rookie, Beatriz Recari.

Pettersen doesn’t want to be called “mom” this week (or have any other old-age reference sent her way), but she’s a good partner for a young player. She brings an intensity to a team format that’s infectious. She and Ciganda will take on Stacy Lewis and U.S. rookie Lexi Thompson in the afternoon.

Lewis failed to deliver an anticipated U.S. point Friday morning with partner Lizette Salas, another rookie. Lewis struck the first American tee shot with seemingly steady hands. She and Salas halved the first hole with Swedes Anna Nordqvist and Caroline Hedwall, but the Americans lost Nos. 8 and 9 to go 2 down by the turn. The match ended, 4 and 2.

With only one American point on the board and three checks in the European win column, the biggest post-lunch surprise was that winning American duo Jessica Korda and Morgan Pressel didn’t get another start. Korda was the only American to strike an opening tee shot on Thursday, and though nerves caused her to throw up down the fairway, she sank the winning putt for her match 16 holes later.

"It's a long weekend, and I'm trying not to play anybody five matches," Mallon said. "I like that team a lot."

European veteran Catriona Matthew, paired with European rookie Jodi Ewart Shadoff, was tough on the greens against Korda and Pressel in the morning, but couldn’t get enough long putts to drop. But Matthew draws 17-year-old Charley Hull for the afternoon. That pair takes on Christie Kerr and Michelle Wie, who also sat in the morning.

Paula Creamer, who teamed with Kerr in the morning and lost to Azahara Munoz and Karine Icher, will rest in the afternoon, and Salas will sit, too.

Sitting for the Europeans: Recari, Icher, Munoz, Ewart Shadoff.
