12. Auburn

2012-13 Golfweek ranking: 19

Go-to guy: Junior Michael Johnson

Season outlook: Two of the Tigers’ top three scoring leaders from a year ago – Dominic Bozzelli and Michael Hebert – are gone. Bozzelli and Hebert combined to lead Auburn in scoring in nine of 15 events last season, including all three postseason tournaments.

But junior Michael Johnson is back along with two other starters: senior Niclas Carlsson and sophomore Jake Mondy, each of whom posted a victory last season. Johnson had an impressive summer, winning the Alabama State Amateur and Dogwood Invitational titles. Carlsson competed for Sweden at the European Team Championship and also was top 10 in stroke play at the British Amateur.

Auburn head coach Nick Clinard also brings in a stellar recruiting class this year led by Matt Gilchrest, who won the FootJoy Invitational this summer to go along with two other top-5 finishes in AJGA invitationals. He’s joined by fellow freshmen Will Long, runner-up at the Carolinas Junior and third at the Azalea Amateur, and Victor Wiggins, a U.S. Amateur qualifier and top-5 finisher at the North Carolina Amateur.
