It's been a notable year for Mike Small.

The Illinois coach led the Illini to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship last spring before playing in the PGA Championship earlier this month. Small, 47, is also soon to become the youngest member of the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame. The induction is scheduled for October.

And on Wednesday, Small won a record 10th Illinois PGA Championship title, shooting 4-under 209 at Olympia Fields.

“This never gets old and that’s why we compete," Small said.

Small won Illinois PGA titles from 2003 to 2010, but had been win-less in the event the past two years. His 2010 victory came by 11 shots at Olympia Fields. He set the South course record of 8-under 63 that year.

In addition to the 10 Illinois PGA victories, Small has also won the Illinois Open four times.

The fall season for the Illini is set to begin next month when Illinois hosts the Fighting Illini Invitational Sept. 13-15 at – you guessed it – Olympia Fields.
