The FedEx Cup and PGA Tour couldn't have asked for a better featured pairing to create some intrigue ahead of the second playoff event of the 2013 season.

Tiger Woods, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson – Nos. 1-2-3, respectively, in both the FedEx Cup standings and OWGR – teed off in the first round of the Deutsche Bank Championship on Friday at TPC Boston. And the billing lived up to the hype.

Despite Scott's 2-over 73, Phil Mickelson flirted with 59 before finishing with an 8-under 63 while Tiger Woods recorded a solid 3-under 68.

Mickelson shares the first-round lead with Brian Davis, who made eight birdies and no bogeys Friday. They lead Kevin Stadler by one shot. Hunter Mahan, Roberto Castro and Sergio Garcia are two shots back at 6 under.

We followed the action all day long! See how it all unfolded, including how the rounds of Woods, Mickelson and Scott played out:

• • •

Update No. 7: 3:01 p.m. EDT

• • •

Update No. 1: 1:30 p.m. EDT

Hunter Mahan starts his tournament out strong with a 6-under 65, a round that included six birdies and no bogeys.

• • •

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 472 yards

One more hole left for this marquee group today, and Phil Mickelson gets the edge in Round 1 as he's 9 under through 17 holes. Tiger is six shots back at 3 under, and it could be 5 or 6 under had it not been for several missed birdie putts. Adam Scott, though, has struggled, entering the final hole of the day at 2 over.

Off the tee: Tiger goes with 3-wood and finds the middle of the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach finds the back part of the green about 15 feet past the hole.

On the green: After just missing the birdie putt, Tiger save par to wrap up a 3-under 68.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 18 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson bogeys No. 9 to close out his 8-under 63 while Adam Scott makes par to finish up his 2-over 73.

• • •

Hole No. 8: Par 3, 213 yards

Tiger has been solid off the tee today, he just hasn't been able to convert many birdie chances.

Off the tee: While Mickelson and Scott are each within 15 feet off the tee, Tiger is some 40 feet away after his tee shot.

On the green: Tiger runs his birdie putt a few feet by, but he manages to save par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 17 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson makes his 10-footer for birdie to move to 9 under while Adam Scott makes par to stay at 2 over.

• • •

Hole No. 7: Par 5, 600 yards

Impressive birdie by Tiger there at No. 6, a downhill 20-footer that found the bottom of the cup. Meanwhile, Phil Mickelson makes par and now will need an eagle here and two birdies to shoot 59.

Off the tee: Tiger goes with driver and finds the fairway.

Second and third shots: Tiger goes with fairway wood, but into the wind, he comes up well short of the green. His third shot is a good one and ends up about 7 feet away.

On the green: Tiger can't get the birdie roll to drop, and he settles for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 16 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott also make pars, remaining at 8 under and 2 over, respectively. . . . Chris Kirk and John Huh each card 5-under 66, and are currently tied for second.

• • •

Hole No. 6: Par 4, 465 yards

Well, it's safe to say 59 is a longshot for Phil Mickelson, who would need to play his final four holes in 4 under to shoot that number. Tiger has no shot at 59, but he can finish strong and gain ground on Lefty.

Off the tee: Driver for Woods, who just misses right and finds the intermediate cut.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach ends up about 20 feet away for the hole.

On the green: Tiger sinks the birdie putt, his fourth birdie of the round.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under thru 15 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson makes par to remain at 8 under while Adam Scott bogeys No. 6 to drop to 2 over. . . . Bob Estes is now 6 under through 13 holes.

• • •

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 466 yards

Tough breaks for all three players in this group at No. 4, Tiger and Phil delivering poor second shots and Adam Scott misses a 5-footer for birdie.

Off the tee: Fairway wood for Tiger and he finds the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach ends up abut 30 feet past.

On the green: Two-putt par for Woods.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 14 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Pars by Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott, too, at No. 5, and they remain at 8 under and 1 over, respectively.

• • •

Hole No. 4: Par 4, 298 yards

A short par 4 here, and with Tiger and Mickelson both hitting it well off the tee, don't be surprised if they both go for the green.

Off the tee: Tiger goes for it and misses way left. He's in the rough and will have a tough second shot – likely will be a flop shot over a large bunker – coming up.

Approach shot: Tiger's second shot comes up short and finds the sand.

Around the green: From the bunker, Tiger blasts out to about 2 feet.

On the green: Woods completes the up and down to save par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 13 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson's drive is just short of the green and left. His chip is a little fat and comes up short of the putting surface. He ends up with par to stay at 8 under. Adam Scott remains at 1 over after a missed birdie at No. 4. . . . Hunter Mahan and Jordan Spieth each move to 4 under and into a seven-way tie for third.

• • •

Hole No. 3: Par 3, 208 yards

Big bounce back for Woods at No. 2, but an even bigger one for Lefty.

Off the tee: After Phil puts his tee shot to about 15 feet, Tiger misses just left of the green. He's in the fairway cut, though, not the rough.

On the green: Tiger two-putts for par, as does Phil.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 12 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Henrik Stenson and John Huh are tied for third right now at 4 under while Bob Estes is still holding onto second place at 5 under.

• • •

Hole No. 2: Par 5, 542 yards

Tough bogeys by Woods and Mickelson at No. 1, but they'll have a chance to get a shot back at the second par 5 of the day.

Off the tee: Tiger finds the fairway with driver.

Second and third shots: Tiger goes for the green, but comes up a little short. He did carry the water, though. Phil's second shot finds the green and he'll have 2 feet for eagle coming up. Tiger's chip ends up about 8 feet away.

On the green: Tiger gets a shot back with birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 11 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson taps in his eagle to move to 8 under, now through 11 holes. He leads by three shots over Bob Estes, who is 5 under.

• • •

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 365 yards

What a first nine by Phil Mickelson, who cards a 7-under 28 and leads Tiger by five shots. It's not like Tiger is playing poorly, though, as he missed just two fairways and two greens, and needed just 14 putts in his first nine holes.

Off the tee: Tiger's drive with a fairway wood goes left and finds the rough. The pin is on the left side of the green, too, and is guarded in the front by a greenside bunker. Phil, on the other hand, finds the right side of the fairway and has a great angle at the flagstick.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach goes long while Phil misses left and finds the sand.

Around the green: Tiger's third finds the green, but he'll have 10 feet or so to save par. Phil blasts out to about 6 feet.

On the green: Tiger misses the par save and notches his first bogey of the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 10 holes

Elsewhere on the course: While Tiger can't save par, neither can Phil, who bogeys to drop back to 6 under. As a result, Adam Scott (1 over) takes honors after his par.

• • •

Hole No. 18: Par 5, 530 yards

Is Phil Mickelson locked in or what? Now the trio of Lefty, Tiger and Adam Scott will get the first of three par 5s on this course. At 530 yards, this hole is reachable for all three guys (assuming they find the fairway).

Off the tee: Nice tee ball from Tiger, who like Phil, finds the fairway and has a look at the green in two.

Second and third shots: Tiger's second shot comes up just short of the green. Phil is also a little short of the putting surface. Tiger's third ends up about 8 feet past.

On the green: Tiger can't get his birdie putt to fall, and he taps in for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 9 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson sinks a 7-footer for birdie to wrap up a 7-under 28 on the back nine (his first nine). He leads by three after Harris English's bogey at No. 9. . . . Bubba Watson and Hunter Mahan are each 3 under right now.

• • •

Hole No. 17: Par 4, 412 yards

Good hole by all three players at No. 16 as they all stuck their tee shots to within 10 feet. Tiger couldn't make up any ground on Lefty, though.

Off the tee: Iron here for Tiger and he finds the fairway.

Approach shot: Tiger finds the middle of the green and he'll have a long birdie putt coming up.

On the green: Tiger two-putts for par from about 30 feet.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 8 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson sticks his approach at No. 17 to about 12 feet and he birdies to move to 6 under through eight holes. . . . Harris English is still just one shot off the lead. English is 5 under through eight holes. . . . Jordan Spieth is even through eight holes while Jason Dufner is 1 over through seven holes.

• • •

Hole No. 16: Par 3, 161 yards

Tiger is surely leaving some scoring chances out there so far. Phil Mickelson, on the other hand, is not. He leads outright with four birdies in his first six holes.

Off the tee: After Phil sticks his tee shot to about 5 feet, Tiger delivers a tee ball just inside of Lefty's.

On the green: Tiger sinks the birdie putt.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under thru 7 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil makes his short birdie to move to 5 under through seven holes. Adam Scott also birdies, making a 10-footer to move back to 1 over.

• • •

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 421 yards

While Tiger has missed a couple birdie putts already today, Phil has gotten most of his to fall. Lefty leads while Tiger is two shots back right now.

Off the tee: Tiger goes with fairway wood off of this shorter par 4 and finds the fairway.

Approach shot: Center of the green for Tiger on the approach.

On the green: From about 25 feet, Tiger two-putts for another par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 6 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson each have about 15-footers for birdie at No. 15, and only Phil can convert. That birdie moves Lefty to 4 under through six holes.

• • •

Hole No. 14: Par 4, 495 yards

So far, Tiger is playing solid; not anything more, not anything less.

Off the tee: Another driver for Woods and he finds the fairway. That's two fairways in three tries with the big stick for Tiger so far today.

Approach shot: Tiger finds the green and he'll have 25 feet for birdie coming up.

On the green: Tiger two-putts for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 5 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson birdies to move to 3 under and into a share of the lead with Harris English and Henrik Stenson. Adam Scott can't get up and down to save par and the bogey at No. 14 drops him to 2 over.

• • •

Hole No. 13: Par 4, 451 yards

Woods has settled down after a shaky first hole. He pulled driver for the first time at No. 12. A sign of more to come? We'll see.

Off the tee: With driver, Tiger misses a little left and he finds the rough for the second time in three tries so far today.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach goes long, hitting close to the hole before rolling just off the back.

Around the green: Tiger's third shot comes up a little short and he will have 6 feet or so for par.

On the green: The par putt drops for Tiger.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 4 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Pars at No. 13 for both Phil and Scott. . . . Harris English leads outright now. He's 3 under through four holes.

• • •

Hole No. 12: Par 4, 461 yards

Nice hole from Tiger to get his first birdie of the day. But Lefty has been better with two birdies in as many holes.

Off the tee: Driver for Woods here and he finds the fairway.

Approach shot: Nice approach by Tiger as he sticks it to about 12 feet.

On the green: Tiger just misses a second straight birdie and settles for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 3 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott also make par at No. 12. Lefty just missed his 18-footer for birdie. . . . Harris English and John Huh are now among the leaders at 2 under.

• • •

Hole No. 11: Par 3, 231 yards

Not a great start for Tiger, who badly missed on that approach at No. 10.

Off the tee: Tiger's tee ball finds the green and he's within 10 feet of the hole.

On the green: It's a birdie for Tiger, who sinks his 9-footer for birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under thru 2 holes

Elsewhere on the course: Phil Mickelson drains a 30-footer for another birdie. He's 2 under through two holes. Adam Scott makes par to remain at 1 over.

• • •

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 425 yards

Tiger will go off from tee No. 10 today alongside Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott. Woods is wearing a light blue polo, grey slacks, white shoes and a white hat. Remember, Tiger said he hit driver on every par 4 and par 5 during his practice round Wednesday.

Off the tee: Woods goes with 5-wood and finds the left intermediate rough.

Approach shot: Tiger's approach is way right of the green and it finds the sand.

Around the green: From the greenside bunker, Tiger blasts out to about 8 feet.

On the green: Tiger makes the 8-footer to save par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even thru 1 hole

Elsewhere on the course: Adam Scott can't get up and down from short of the green and he bogeys the opening hole. Phil Mickelson, however, birdies to move to 1 under, one shot back of early leaders Lee Westwood and Josh Teater.
