Epperson leads Q-School after second round 63

Chris Epperson fired a second-round bogey-free 9-under 63 on Friday to lead Web.com Tour Q-School Final Stage by four at PGA West’s Nicklaus Tournament Course in La Quinta, Calif.
The 31-year-old, from Hilton Head, S.C., has a 16-under 128 total.
In a tie for second are Steve Saunders after a 7-under 65 and Nathan Tyler with a 66. Both at 12-under 132.
Here are some notable items from Friday:
• Max Homa was 3 over through his first 13 holes at Q-School. He was 11 under on his last 23 holes. The 2013 NCAA Individual champion fired a 8-under 64 on Friday on the Tournament Course, which included six birdies and an eagle.
• Former Florida standout Tyler McCumber and current California player and 2012-13 Haskins Award winner Michael Kim are tied for 14 th after second rounds of 69. The other amateurs competing USC’s Anthony Paolucci (1-under 143, T-77) and former BYU player Zac Blair (1-over 145, T-105).
• First-round leader Justin Shin shot 2-over 74 in the second round and dropped to T-25.
• Blayne Barber, who was disqualified from first stage of Q-School a year ago, struggled to a 1-under 71 on Friday after a 67 in the first round. Barber made four birdies and four bogeys. He is currently T-25.
