Concession Club to host new amateur team event
Wednesday, December 18, 2013
The Concession Club in Bradenton, Fla., will host a new match-play style amateur tournament called the Concession Cup in 2014.
The event is scheduled to take place May 1-3, featuring teams from the United States and Great Britain and Ireland. Eighteen-player teams will be made up of eight mid-amateurs (25 and older), eight senior-amateurs (up to 65-years-old) and two super-senior amateurs (65 and older).
“The Concession Golf Club is proud to assist in the development of the Concession Cup and to act as host to the inaugural competition," said Bruce Cassidy Jr., general manager of The Concession Golf Club, in a release. “Our heritage is built on the spirit of match-play competition – exemplified through the historic handshake between Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin at the 1969 Ryder Cup matches.”
The honorary captains for the tournament are Nicklaus and Jacklin.
“I am excited to be part of The Concession Cup and to join my friend Tony Jacklin as an Honorary Captain,” Nicklaus said. “My appreciation for amateur golf has always been strong . . . so I am very pleased to lend my support to this terrific event."
“Jack and I obviously shared a very special time at the 1969 Ryder Cup matches, and to know that the spirit of that moment was part of the vision for The Concession Cup is very gratifying," Jacklin said. “I am already looking forward to the event next April.”
Nicklaus and Jacklin will attend the event, including the April 28 opening ceremonies, while Concession Club member Paul Azinger will serve as the honorary chairman of the event.
The tournament will also benefit three charities: the Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, The First Tee of Tampa, and Orphan's Heart.
The Concession Club will also host the 2014 Big Ten Match-Play Championship, as well as the 2015 men’s and women’s NCAA Championships.
