No. 5 Alabama shot 9-under 279 Sunday at Rio Mar’s River Course to take a one-shot lead after the first round of the Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Tide was led by its No. 4 and 5 players, Tom Lovelady and Scott Strohmeyer, who both shot 69.

Oklahoma, No. 42 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 280, while No. 19 Clemson is another shot back. Tenth-ranked Georgia Tech is in fourth place at 2-under 286.

Clemson sophomore Billy Kennerly made six birdies and an eagle in a first-round 67 that gave him the individual lead. Oklahoma’s Eduardo Castiello and Beau Titsworth and SMU’s Austin Smotherman are one shot back. Alabama’s Lovelady and Strohmeyer, Augusta State’s Maverick Antcliff, Clemson’s Crawford Reeves and Georgia Tech Seth Reeves shot 69.

Alabama also counted a 70 from Cory Whitsett and 71 from Bobby Wyatt. Justin Thomas, last year’s Haskins Award winner, shot 73.
