KAPALUA, Hawaii – Steve Stricker was steadfast in his decision to step back from golf and limit his play.

Stricker, who will be 46 next month, has met so many of his goal's as a touring pro. Now, his focus will be on spending more time with his family and improving his community of Madison, Wis., with the establishment of a foundation to help adolescents.

“I still think I can play well and to a high level,” Stricker said in a news conference Thursday at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions, the PGA Tour's season-opening, winners-only event that begins Friday. “I just probably won't be out as much as I have in the past years, but I'm extremely excited about it. It was kind of a weight lifted off, when I've made the decision, and so it's been good. And this foundation is really an exciting thing for us in the Madison area, too.”

Stricker, the defending champion here at Kapalua's Plantation Course, tentatively plans to play 10-12 events. After this week, he will take six weeks off and return for the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship in Marana, Ariz., then the WGC-Cadillac Championship at Doral before the Shell Houston Open and the Masters.

The 12-time Tour winner hinted that he might not cross the Atlantic this summer for Scotland's Muirfield and the Open Championship, which he hasn't missed since 2006.

“I'm not quitting,” Stricker said. “I don't want to quit. I still enjoy the game. I still enjoy competing. It's just time for me to be home a little bit more and maybe focus all my attention to this foundation and do that a little bit more.”

Stricker hopes to develop the interest in the foundation beyond just fundraising and possibly create a relationship with a golf event in the future.

“We are not closing our eyes to an idea of maybe having either a PGA Tour event, a Champions Tour event, something down the road,” Stricker said. “It's all about raising money for kids and trying to do something good for our community.”
