LPGA: Jamie Farr to become The Marathon Classic
Tuesday, January 8, 2013
News of the 2013 schedule is dripping out of LPGA headquarters one press release at a time. In an effort to give sponsors their due, the LPGA has chosen to send out individual releases about several tournaments rather than overwhelm us with good news. But, hey, at least there’s good news.
One day after the announcement of a new tournament in the Bahamas this spring, the tour delivered promising news Jan. 8 about one of its oldest events: the Jamie Farr. Marathon Petroleum has come on board as title sponsor in what will now be known as The Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning. After a one-year hiatus from TV coverage, the tournament will return to Golf Channel in 2013. This year’s event will be held July 18-21 at Highland Meadows Golf Club in Sylvania, Ohio, near Toledo. Marathon also sponsors Rolex Player of the Year Stacy Lewis.
“MASH” TV star Jamie Farr hosted the event for 28 years but said “pending show-business concerns” might keep him from being able to continue.
“With great enthusiasm, and as a reflection of everything that Jamie has meant to the tournament and the community, Toledo Classic Inc. has permanently named our scholarship fund the Jamie Farr Scholarship Fund to preserve his legacy with the tournament,” said Richard Hylant, board chairman of the Toledo Classic.
The LPGA also announced Acer as presenting sponsor of the ShopRite LPGA Classic, to be held May 30-June 2 in Galloway, N.J. Acer, a Taiwanese electronics company, also sponsors top-ranked Yani Tseng.
