Roig will not play for UCLA this spring

UCLA coach Carrie Forsyth might need to find another miracle walk-on to fill her roster if things keep heading in the wrong direction. Sophomore Kyle Roig will not play for the Bruins this spring after Forsyth and Roig decided it would be best if Roig left the team.
With All-American Tiffany Lua out with a wrist injury, that leaves two unheralded freshmen in the lineup – Louise Ridderstrom and Jacquie LeMarr – along with Erynne Lee, Ani Gulugian and Lee Lopez.
“Team golf isn’t for everybody,” Forsyth said of Roig’s decision. The former Harder Hall champ will remain on campus as a student and plans to turn professional.
In the fall of 2006, Forsyth phoned Maiya Tanaka, then a student on campus, and offered her a spot on the team after two players left school early to turn pro. The Bruins finished third as a team that year at the NCAA Championship with Tanaka in the lineup.
“You just never know,” Forsyth said.
The Bruins hope to have Lua back at least by the spring quarter.
