The only AJGA tournament outside the continental United States, the Puerto Rico Open takes place this week at Trump International Golf Club in Rio Grande. The 72-player field is will represented by 17 states and six foreign countries, including eight players from Puerto Rico.

Of the 72 players, 21 of them have decided to continue to play golf at the collegiate level with verbal or national letter of intent commitments.

The winner of the event will receive an exemption into the PGA Tour’s Puerto Rico Open to be held March 7-10 at the same site.

Here are five players to watch in Puerto Rico over the holiday weekend:

Cameron Champ

This 2012 first-team Rolex Junior All-American is kicking off his 2013 season in Puerto Rico. Champ, ranked No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, is the highest-ranked junior in the event this week. In 2012, the Texas A&M verbal commit placed second at both the Junior PGA Championship and The Ping Invitational.

Matt Gilchrest

Gilchrest enters the 2013 season as his last as a junior golfer. In the fall, Gilchreast is off to Auburn to play collegiate golf. At No. 22 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, he made AJGA history in 2012 when he tied the boys record for most consecutive wins after claiming three victories in a season. He was named a honorable-mention Rolex Junior All-American in 2012.

Rigel Fernandes

Fernandes won the 2012 Under Armour/Vicky Hurst Championship and made it to the quarterfinals of the Polo Junior Golf Classic. He has six Future Collegians World Tour (FCWT) wins in six years. He has signed with South Florida and will continue to play golf there in the fall. He is No. 20 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

Max Greyserman

Greyserman is returning to Puerto Rico after an eighth-place finish last year. In 2012, the Duke verbal commit had four top-10 AJGA finishes, including a win at the Golf Pride Junior Classic. No. 32 in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, Greyserman was a second-team Rolex Junior All-American in 2012.

Daniel De La Garza

Garza had four top-10 AJGA finishes, including three in the top-4 during the 2012 season. The Texas native will continue to play golf at Harvard University this fall. The 2012 honorable-mention Rolex Junior All-American is No. 38 is the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.
