Player Diary: Alabama's Justin Thomas (Part 7)
Tuesday, January 22, 2013
We are officially back in the swing of things at Alabama and looking forward to getting the spring season started up. We started class a few weeks back, so all of us on the team are back into our groove and balancing class and golf again. The offseason treated all of us really well, but we are very excited to get back into competition in Puerto Rico in a little less than a month.
As for the offseason, as a team we have found some fun things to do besides golf. We all love playing and practicing, but there is a time when we just have to relax and put the clubs up for a little bit. Especially with it being cold out, we have done things such as bowling, seeing many movies, cooking out, and even basketball as a team. One of the biggest reasons I chose to come to school here at Alabama was because of the team; we are all so close and it is basically like a brotherhood. We do most everything together, and that makes this experience at school even better for myself.
The basketball has by far been the most entertaining. Between our lack of skill and practice, it can be pretty comical once or twice a pickup game. It is mainly done for us to get in shape better as we play anywhere from 3 vs. 3 to 5 vs. 5. We have a freshman on our team, Robby Prater, who was the starting PG for his high school basketball team all throughout high school; he is extremely talented. He is all of about 5’8 and he schools all of us. Just like when can with each other in golf, we enjoy learning from him and watching him the few times we play every week or so. Little activities like this have made off season a blast and a fun time to bond and hang out even more with our teammates.
We have six of us on the team (Lee Knox, Dru Love, Tom Lovelady, Cory Whitsett, Bobby Wyatt, and myself) competing in the Jones Cup Invitational in the first week of February. Although it is an individual tournament, it is really cool to have five of my other teammates playing in such a prestigious event. We are all looking forward to the chance to play a great course in Ocean Forest, which is personally one of my favorites. Wish all of us luck.
