The R&A said an injured wrist caused Alex Noren to withdraw after the first round of the Open Championship at Muirfield, bringing the number of WDs from the field to three.

The Swede, who attended Oklahoma State, won the 2009 European Masters. He finished ninth in last year's Open Championship. This season, Noren ranks 26th with 563,614 euros in winnings on the European Tour.

Thursday, Noren opened with a double bogey on a first hole that roared back against the field today, made the turn in 40 and went on to finish with an 83.

Noren's WD came on the heels of Louis Oosthuizen (hip) and Peter Hanson (back) earlier in the day.
