A mid-day rain delay prevented the entire field from finishing the first round Wednesday at the Southern Amateur, but Zachary Olsen had time to cap his 8-under 64 for the lead. Olsen eagled the 18th hole at The Club at Carlton Woods in The Woodlands, Texas, for a one-shot lead.

Olsen, who won the 2011 Junior Invitational and will attend Oklahoma State in the fall, had only one bogey, at the par-4 sixth. He finished his round late in the day, overtaking 2012 Porter Cup champion Richy Wereknski and mid-amateur Kevin Marsh at 7-under 65. Werenski plays for Georgia Tech.

Alabama’s Tom Lovelady and Oklahoma’s Cole Wiederkehr posted 6-under 66 for a share of fourth.

Play was delayed for a little more than an hour and a half on Wednesday, which meant several players were unable to finish their rounds.
