Toy Box: Pettersson drops anchored putter
Tuesday, July 23, 2013
Carl Pettersson, who used a long putter for 16 years, played all four rounds of the Open Championship with a 38-inch counterbalanced Rife Aruba putter. In recent years, the length of Pettersson’s long putter was 49 inches.
According to Rife tour rep Kyle Ulrikson, Pettersson has been practicing with the Aruba since the Travelers Championship in June. It is counterbalanced with a Winn grip that weighs about 125 grams, some 40 grams heavier than a conventional putter grip.
Pettersson uses a split grip, with his right hand positioned exactly as he did with the long putter.
The Aruba is a modern heel-shafted blade putter with pronounced heel and toe weighting. Introduced in 2010, it is part of Rife’s Legacy Series. The putter commonly retails for $149.99, although a Rife spokesman said the price soon will go down to $99.99 because the Legacy Series is being phased out. The Aruba, however, will be reintroduced in 2014 with a new name as part of Rife’s Iconic Series.
