TRUCKEE, Calif. –– Davis Riley will get another crack at match play in the U.S. Junior Amateur.

A year after falling to Jim Liu in the Round of 32 in Stratham, N.H., Riley carded a second straight 2-under 70 to advance out of stroke-play qualifying Tuesday at Martis Camp Club.

His round on Tuesday included four birdies, and an eagle at the par-5 15th hole, where Riley hit a 4-iron from 240 yards to about 8 feet.

“It was nice,” Riley said. “I hit a really good drive and I just tried to chase up a 4-iron into the green and it rolled up there perfect.”

The Alabama commit and high school junior has had a summer to remember. He finished T-16 at the Thunderbird International Junior in May. He then placed second at the AJGA Junior at Steelwood and T-9 at the FootJoy Invitational in June. And then a couple of weeks ago he was T-25 at the Rolex Tournament of Champions.

“This summer has been a solid summer for me,” Riley said. “I put some hard work into my short game and it’s paying off in these tournaments.”

If there’s one thing that Riley still has to work on, it’s closing tournaments. He shot 78 in the final round at both the Rolex Tournament of Champions and FootJoy Invitational. It’s those final-round woes that have come between Riley and a victory.

“I gotta learn to stay focused in the last round,” Riley said. “That’s the most important one. Hopefully I can do that this week.”

He came through in the last round of stroke-play qualifying on Tuesday. Now he’ll begin match play, where every round is a final round.
