TRUCKEE, Calif. –– Sam Horsfield has needed just 23 holes to win his first two matches at the U.S. Junior Amateur.

After defeating Dean Sakata, 7 and 6, on Wednesday, Horsfield made quick work of Nick Hardy on Thursday, notching an 8-and-7 victory at Martis Camp Club. It’s the largest combined margin of victory in the first two rounds since 2001, when Kevin Silva recorded 8-and-6 and 7-and-6 victories.

“I played really good,” Horsfield said. “I think I only missed one or two fairways, hit the ball really good and made a lot of good putts.

“I’m not sure how many under I was but I know I was quite a few under the last two days.”

Horsfield notched six birdies (made or conceded) on Wednesday. He added six more on Thursday. His first came at the par-4 second to take a 1-up lead. He made a 15-footer for birdie at the par-4 sixth to move to 2 up.

He then won six straight holes to close out the match. He hit a bunker shot to 4 feet to set up birdie at the par-5 seventh. He was conceded a 30-footer for birdie at No. 9. At the par-5 10th, he found another bunker only to hit his third to about a foot and make the birdie.

On the final hole of the match, Horsfield snap-hooked his drive left, but the ball hit a tree and bounced back into the fairway. He then hit 5-wood to 40 feet and two-putted for the win.

Horsfield will now play the winner of the Aaron Terrazas-Sean Crocker match in the Round of 16 this afternoon.

“I just have to keep doing what I’m doing, keep playing the way I’m playing and see what happens,” Horsfield said. “Hopefully it will be the same (result).”
