TRUCKEE, Calif. –– Davis Riley got out to an early lead in the final match of the 66th U.S. Junior Saturday at Martis Camp Club. He leads Scottie Scheffler, 1 up, after 18 holes.
Scheffler double-bogeyed the par-4 opening hole to give Riley a 1-up advantage after one hole. Bogeys by Scheffler at Nos. 5-6 stretched Riley's lead to 3 up.
But Scheffler closed the gap back to 1 up by winning the next two holes, the par-5 seventh with birdie and the par-3 eighth with par. Riley took 2-up leads again at Nos. 11 and 13, but Scheffler, who closed out his semifinal match with Doug Ghim with a conceded 2-foot birdie putt at the par-3 14th on Friday, made a long birdie putt at No. 14 Saturday morning to move back to 1 down.
Scheffler had several chances to even up the match before the lunch break, but Riley held on. At the short par-4 16th, both players had par putts from less than 5 feet. After Riley pulled his putt, Scheffler pushed his, and both ended up with bogey. Scheffler then hit it to about 15 feet at the par-3 17th, but Riley hit his a tad closer. Both made pars.
At the final hole of the morning, the par-4 18th, Riley found a fairway bunker, but after Scheffler stuck his approach to 3 feet, Riley hit his to inside 10 feet. Riley drained his 9-footer for birdie to stay ahead of Scheffler, who would also make his birdie.
