It's coined "Golf's Longest Day" for a reason - because it just doesn't want to end, and 36 holes can feel like an eternity when a spot in the U.S. Open is on the line.

We were all over the United States to bring you updates all day long, as well as features and notes from each site.

Here is our complete coverage from Monday's U.S. Open Sectionals:

Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club, Bradenton, Fla.

On a day that featured a 90-minute weather delay – nearly an inch of rain came down at the course – former North Florida standout Kevin Phelan withstood the elements and took the top spot in Florida. He'll be joined at Merion by former Kent State standout James Hahn. John Nieporte grabbed the final spot on the third playoff hole with David Snyder, finishing Tuesday morning.

Story: Trump protege's persistent approach pays off with U.S. Open spot

Commentary: Phelan's growth apparent in securing U.S. Open spot in Florida

Jordan Spieth, who left Texas to turn pro midseason and then risked Web.com Tour status to advance to the PGA Tour, has made it into the U.S. Open as well.

Ryan Palmer, another notable in the Dallas field, took place in a playoff that concluded Tuesday – with Zack Fischer earning the final spot and Palmer ending up as first alternate. Oklahoma men's head coach Ryan Hybl is second alternate.

Darkness was setting in at 9:02 p.m. Monday at the Lakes Golf & Country Club as PGA Tour rookie Luke Guthrie stood over one of the biggest putts of his young life. On the third hole of a U.S. Open sectional qualifier playoff, 5 feet of grass on the 10th green stood between Guthrie and his first major championship. Down it went. Last spot. On to Merion.

Geoffrey Sisk and Jesse Smith were two of the three who shared medalist honors, but amateur Gavin Hall stole the show with a late surge in the afternoon round that pushed him into the three-way tie. Amateur Brandon Matthews had holed out on No. 18 to move into a qualifying position, only to see his score surpassed as he settled for first alternate.

Champions Tour regular Jay Don Blake emerged out of the field of 42 that was battling for two spots in the 2013 U.S. Open. Blake posted the lowest 18-hole score of the day to distance himself from the pack, but a playoff was needed to decide the final spot.

Woodmont CC, Rockville, Md.

This one ended, not surprisingly, with a playoff for the eighth and final spot in the national championship. PGA Tour player Matt Bettencourt, East Carolina alumnus Harold Varner III and former New Mexico player Sam Saunders tied for that final spot, but only Bettencourt advanced from the three-for-one playoff.

No, the winner of the U.S. Open sectional qualifier at the Tumble Creek Club was not a college player. The winner was 34-year-old Wil Collins of Albuquerque, N.M., who was shadowed during every step of the 36-hole competition by his 72-year-old teacher, Dave Walters.
