Patrick Christovich of New Orleans, is eyeing one of two mid-am births on the 2013 Walker Cup team.

Why?

“It’s an added incentive. It gives me a boost to practice more and learn more about the game,” the 34-year-old said.

Since the USGA announced that two mid-amateurs would be on the 10-member USA team in January, Christovich has added a few tournaments this summer to get his name out there.

He has added the Northeast, Southern and Western Amateurs.

Christovich had an impressive 2012 – he won the 2012 Louisiana Amateur and Mid-Amateur, the Mackel (a New Orleans-based tournament), and that has continued into 2013 by winning the Crane Cup. He also advanced to match play at the U.S. Mid-Amateur at Conway Farms.

As of late, the real-estate agent hasn’t had a lot of time to practice. His wife, Patricia – who sometimes caddies for him – had the couple’s first child on May 15.

“I mean, I’m not getting any sleep,” he said. “I just want to be there to see everything.”

On June 2, Christovich participated in the Ball Ground, Ga., U.S. Open Sectional in hopes of playing in his first major championship. He shot 71-72 for a 1-under 143 total – eight shots out of advancing. It was a warm up for the Louisiana State Amateur, which takes place this week where he is the defending champion.

He says the best asset of his game is his management and being very consistent.

“Over the last year, my wedge game went from non-existent to decent,” Christovich said. “Now I can attack some of these golf course.”

This consistent play will have to continue over the summer if he wants a chance at a coveted spot on Team USA.

“That’s kind of the pinnacle of amateur golf to me,” Christovich said. “As a pro, Mason Rudolph, said that was one of the greatest achievements, as a pro, making the Ryder Cup team. It’s the same thing. It’s the top thing to make, you’ve established yourself.”
