D. White takes first-round lead at Palmetto
Thursday, June 6, 2013
Davin White completed play just before dark Wednesday and it was good enough to give him the clubhouse lead after the first round of the Palmetto Amateur.
White, of Locust Grove, Ga., shot a opening 5-under 66 to take a one-shot lead at Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
Play was halted for the day because of darkness caused by two rain delays, the second lasting more than three hours. Seven groups returned early Thursday to complete the round before the second round began.
The 20-year-old White recently completed his sophomore season as a member of the Georgia State University team.
Ryan Eibner, 22, who recently finished his junior season at East Carolina, and Carson Jacobs, who finished his freshman season at Vanderbilt, are tied for second at 67.
Jacobs, 19, earned a spot in the field via qualifying on Monday. He won the qualifier with 2-under 68.
Scott Strohmeyer, who helped Alabama win the NCAA Championship June 2, shot 69 and is tied for eighth along with South Carolina mid-amateur Todd White, the 2010 champion. Strohmeyer finished second here last year, five shots behind Mitch Gray, of Florence, S.C.
