U.S. rounds played down 14.8 percent in April

Rounds played in the U.S. fell nearly 15 percent in April, with greater rainfall in 5 of the 8 reporting regions contributing to the decline.

According to the National Golf Rounds Played Report, the number of rounds dropped 14.8 percent compared with April 2012. For the first four months of the year, U.S. rounds declined 15.1 percent compared with the same period a year ago.

Every region – except the Pacific – reported a drop in rounds for April. The Pacific, which includes California, Hawaii, Oregon and Washington, reported a 2.4 percent gain for the month.

Private golf facilities reported more significant declines: down 18.1 percent for April and down 18.2 percent for the year-to-date period. By comparison, rounds played at public-access courses fell 13.9 percent in April and 14.2 percent for the year-to-date period.

The National Golf Rounds Played Report is published collaboratively by Golf Datatech, PGA of America, National Golf Course Owners Association and National Golf Foundation. Data from 3,775 courses were included in the April report.

South Central: -14.7 percent / -11.6 percent

(Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas)

South Atlantic: -4.7 percent / -7.5 percent

(Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia)

Mid Atlantic: -11.3 percent / -30.2 percent

(New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania)

New England: -14.5 percent / -24.9 percent

(Connecticut, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont)

United States: -14.8 percent / -15.1 percent
