Charley Hoffman made five birdies and two eagles en route to a first-round bogey-free 9-under 61 to lead by one over Hunter Mahan at the PGA Tour's Travelers championship. Hoffman is looking to claim his third PGA victory.

Mahan, who is coming off a T-4 finish at the U.S. Open last week, opened with an 8-under 62. His round consisted of eight birdies. Another shot back is 2012 Masters winner, Bubba Watson. Watson had two bogeys on his card along with seven birdies and an eagle to card a 7-under 63.

Newly crowned U.S. Open champion Justin Rose fired a 3-under 67 after a shaky front nine.

Recent Washington graduate Chris Williams is making his professional debut this week. Williams was even-par until the 13th and 14 holes. He bogeyed both, but got one shot back with a birdie at the par-4 15th. He has one hole left.

Graham DeLaet finishes with a par to card a 5-under 67, T-3 with four others: John Merrick, Rod Pampling, Webb Simpson and Camilo Villegas.

Charley Hoffman sticks his approach to about 2 feet on No. 18, and sinks the putt to claim the lead – a 28 on the back nine gets him to 61 for the day and a 1-shot advantage over Hunter Mahan.

Graham DeLaet gets up and down for par at No. 8, still T-3 at 5 under and the only one on that mark still on the course.

Co-leader Charley Hoffman leaves himself with another long birdie try at No. 17, and again rolls it to about 3 feet. He makes par to remain 8 under and tied for the lead with Hunter Mahan.

Zach Johnson pars No. 12 to remain 4 under. Justin Rose birdies No. 12 to get back to even par for the first time since the third hole.

Co-leader Charley Hoffman lags a long putt to about 3 feet at the par-3 16th, then sinks his par putt to remain tied with Hunter Mahan atop the leaderboard at 8 under.

Charley Hoffman, already taking aim at leader Hunter Mahan, also takes aim at the green with his tee shot at the par-4 15th hole. He misses to the right of the green, then chips to the left-side pin – and nearly makes his third eagle of the round. It runs a good 5 feet past though. He makes his birdie putt and ties Hunter Mahan for the lead at 8 under.

Rod Pampling misses the green with his last approach shot of the day and pitches to about 12 feet. The Aussie two-putts from there for a bogey and a 65, tied with John Merrick and Webb Simpson at 5 under as he heads to the clubhouse.

John Merrick birdies No. 18 for a 65 at 5 under to pull alongside Webb Simpson in third. They're a shot behind Rod Pampling, who has parred five straight, and three back of leader Webb Simpson.

Webb Simpson finishes with two pars to card a 5-under 65, good for third as he heads to the scoring tent.

Padraig Harrington birdies No. 15-17 to get to 4 under and ends with a par for 66. Harrington is coming off a mixed-blessing U.S. Open – T-21 but at 11 over.

Leader Hunter Mahan finds the green in two at the par-4 No. 9, but has about a 40-footer in front of him. He gets his first putt to within 5 feet and makes the par putt for 62, heading to the clubhouse two shots ahead of Rod Pampling.

With the afternoon groups getting started, leader Hunter Mahan cards another par and is still bogey-free at 8 under as he heads to the No. 9 tee to end his opening round. Perhaps he's having an easier time focusing without the gallery singing "Happy Birthday" to his playing partner, as happened Sunday at the U.S. Open (read Jim McCabe's PGA Tour notes here).

Rod Pampling pars Nos. 4-5 to remain alone in second at 6 under.

Webb Simpson moves to 5 under with a birdie at No. 7.

Tommy Gainey and John Huh finish their days at 4 under to join Chris Stroud in signing for a 66. Four golfers have gotten to the clubhouse at 3 under for a 67: Bo Van Pelt, Dicky Pride, John Rollins and Robert Streb.

Hunter Mahan pars No. 7 to remain 8 under.

The group at T-3 and 4 under has grown to seven: Tommy Gainey, John Hun, Richard H. Lee, John Merrick, Webb Simpson, Chris Stroud and Camilo Villegas. Only Stroud has finished his round so far.

Chris Stroud is the early leader in the clubhouse, a birdie at No. 9 getting him to a 4-under 68.

Camilo Villegas' third straight birdie gets him to 4 under as well, through 13.

Leader Hunter Mahan birdies again, this time at the par-5 No. 6 after pitching his third shot to about 15 feet and making the putt. He's 8 under, two ahead of Rod Pampling and four ahead of Webb Simpson, John Huh and Tommy Gainey.

Camilo Villegas nets back-to-back birdies at Nos. 2-3 to get to 3 under through 12. Stewart Cink bogeys No. 4 to slip to 2 under; some other big names on that mark include Padraig Harrington and John Daly.

Early risers

It's difficult to play any better than Hunter Mahan so far today – after his strong showing during U.S. Open week despite a difficult Sunday, Mahan is bogey-free with seven birdies through 14 holes. He made three straight birdies on Nos. 13-15.

Rod Pampling is 6 under through 12 holes and Tommy Gainey is 5 under through 15 holes, while John Huh and Webb Simpson are 4 under through 15 and 13 holes respectively.

Interestingly enough, all five teed off at No. 10.

Colt Knost and Michael Letzig are 6 over through 17 and 11 holes respectively, while Robert Allenby and Aaron Baddeley are 5 over through 14 and 15.
