J.T. Poston edged defending champ Kevin Dougherty and Max McGreevy by two shots to win the Southwestern Amateur on Friday at Desert Mountain Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Poston, a rising junior at Western Carolina and No. 191 in the Golfweek/Sagarin men's college individual rankings, opened with a 69 and followed with a pair of 71s – then shot a final-round 65 for a total of 4 under par and a come-from-behind win.
“I had lots of birdies yesterday but made some dumb bogeys," said Poston, of Hickory, N.C. "Today my warmup was good, and I had five birdies and no bogeys. . . . I hope to come back to defend.”
Dougherty, of Oklahoma State and ranked No. 90, relied on a final-round 66 to get to 2 under. He earned runner-up honors in a scorecard playoff over McGreevy, who had shot 65 in the third round but closed with a 72.
