PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. – The Honda Classic began with the world’s top two players in the field. Its final pairing will feature two players chasing their first PGA Tour victory.
Luke Guthrie and Michael Thompson are tied at 8-under 202, two shots ahead of a major champion and former World No. 1. Geoff Ogilvy and Lee Westwood both shot 70 in Saturday’s high winds and will play in the second-to-last group.
Guthrie and Thompson also played in the final group Saturday, and handled themselves well. Guthrie shot 71, while Thompson birdied the last for an even-par 70. They’ll tee off at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
Guthrie closed with eight consecutive pars, and Thompson was 1 under on the final seven after opening the back nine with consecutive bogeys. He holed a 25-foot birdie putt at the par-4 12th, then two-putted after reaching the par-5 finishing hole in two shots.
