Thompson, Ogilvy earn last-minute invites to Doral

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. After the Official World Golf Ranking was updated with results from the Honda Classic, Michael Thompson and Geoff Ogilvy found out they will be making the drive from PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to nearby Trump Doral in Miami for next week’s WGC-Cadillac Championship.
Thompson, who won his first PGA Tour title Sunday at the Honda Classic with a final-round 1-under 69, will play in his first World Golf Championship event. The University of Alabama alum moved from 114th in the world to 45th, five spots above the top-50 position needed for an invitation.
“I get new experiences this year to play in the WGCs,” Thompson said. “That’s been a goal ever since I got out on Tour. And to do it in this fashion is unbelievable.”
Ogilvy, who recently has struggled with his game, recorded his best finish on the PGA Tour since a tie for second at the Deutsche Bank Championship in September 2010.
The Honda finish moved Ogilvy from 79th in the world to 47th.
“I basically just assumed I was missing Doral because I thought I had to win,” Ogilvy said. “I thought, ‘Well, if I could win, that would be great and I would get in,’ but I kind of penciled in a week off next week.”
After missing out on the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship -- where the Australian won in 2006 and ’09 and was runner-up in ’07 -- Ogilvy will return to a Doral course on which he won in 2008, earning the second of three career WGC titles.
Sony winner Russell Henley also will make the trip to Doral because of his top-10 position on the FedEx Cup points list. Henley finished T-13 at Honda and is third behind Brandt Snedeker and Matt Kuchar on the FedEx Cup points list.
“I’m going to have to go do some laundry I think,” Ogilvy said about his unexpected trip to Doral. “I haven’t got a hotel room for tonight. But half the Tour lives in this area, so I’m sure I can find somewhere to stay.”
