Behind a 3-under 69 from Brandon Hagy and a trio of 72s from Michael Weaver, Max Homa and Joel Stalter, California jumped out in front early Friday at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters in Las Vegas.

The Bears, No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, shot 3-under 285 and hold a one-shot lead over Stanford.

The Cardinal got a 6-under 66 from Patrick Rodgers, who leads the individual standings by two shots over Cory Whitsett of Alabama. The Crimson Tide, ranked third by Golfweek, are third as a team after a first-round 289.

UCLA, which is also fielding a team this weekend at Bandon Dunes, is tied for fourth with New Mexico at 3-over 291. Florida and Texas A&M are a shot back of them.

Texas, ranked second by Golfweek, is in last place after an 18-over 306. Golfweek's No. 2-ranked individual, freshman Brandon Stone, shot 6 over for the Longhorns on Friday.
