Singh in Tampa Bay Championship field
Friday, March 8, 2013
Vijay Singh is in the field for next week's Tampa Bay Championship. His presence indicates that he has not been suspended by the PGA Tour for his use of deer antler spray. It is not known whether the Tour has reached a decision in his case, though commissioner Tim Finchem said two weeks ago at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship that a decision would be made "relatively soon."
Unlike conduct rules, the Tour is required under its anti-doping policy to announce punishment for violations. The Tour is not required to announce its decision not to penalize a player, though.
Deer antler spray contains the banned substance IGF-1 (Insulin-like Growth Factor). Singh admitted to using the spray in a statement released Jan. 30 and withdrew from that week's Waste Management Phoenix Open, citing an injured back. He has made two starts since his statement, finishing 50th at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am and 51st at the Northern Trust Open.
