Sooners collect third title of season at Clover Cup
Oklahoma built such a lead in the first round of the Clover Cup that no other team could catch up. The Sooners claimed the team title Sunday by 18 shots.
Oklahoma shot a first-round 7-under 281 at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa, Ariz., to take an immediate lead. Northwestern, with 285, was the next-closest team, and scores dropped off from there. Oklahoma closed with rounds of 289 and 292 to finish the tournament at 2-under 862. It’s the third victory for the Sooners this year, ranked No. 3 by Golfweek.
“We played solid all week,” head coach Veronique Drouin-Luttrell said. “Everyone had been practicing hard since our last event and it paid off for this one. I’m really proud of everyone for the hard work they’ve put in. We’ve been consistent and very focused this week. Practice was key.”
Oklahoma placed all five golfers inside the top 25. The Sooner effort was led by defending national champion Chirapat Jao-Javanil, who was second at 4-under 212. Tulsa’s Kristina Merkle won the individual title with a 6-under 210 total.
SMU, fresh off a victory at the Central District Invitational, finished second and Texas Tech, coming from a victory at the Westbrook Invitational, was third. Tulsa was fourth and host Notre Dame was fifth.
